Embroidery SeriesInstructor: Lucy Barter Embroidery is the art of decorating fabric with a needle and thread or yarn. Other materials, such as precious metal threads, pearls, beads, quills and sequins, were incorporated by enterprising women. Its origins are so old that it is not known when it began, but examples survive from Ancient Egypt, Iron Age Northern Europe and Zhou Dynasty China. Always considered a “woman’s art,” making and selling embroidery was often one of the few jobs that women of “good character” could hold. Wonderful examples of needlework are in Filoli’s permanent collection and Filoli is pleased to continue the teaching of this important art form. Using kits designed by the instructor, a graduate of the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court, students learn to create individual pieces of work in each workshop. Classes take place in the Bourn Room on the second floor of the historic House. Access is by stairs only. For questions about accessibility, please contact the Education Office by email to classes@filoli.org or by phone at (650) 364-8300, ext. 233. Valley Poppies by Paul Kratter. Plein Air Oil Painting WorkshopsPlein air is French for “in the open air.” It is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors, a practice that became popular in impressionist painting. California has a long tradition of producing great plein air painters. Paintings done outside are completed in a relatively short time, as the artist works to capture the scene before the light changes significantly. Through these workshops you will learn useful techniques for painting plein air. Our class sizes are very limited in order to provide plenty of individual attention and access to the Garden and woodland areas. Some painting experience is recommended. Classroom space is also available for those wishing to take their work indoors.
