Something for everyone in our Adult Programs.

What is better than to see a child engaged and having fun as they create their own unique masterpiece or discover why so many newts make Filoli their home? Children and their families can enjoy Filoli and its bountiful resources through interactive programming and hands–on learning designed just for them.

School Programs
Filoli serves thousands of school children and teachers each year through three curriculum-based programs. Scholarships and transportation funds are available to schools serving a high percentage of low–income families. For more information visit the Teachers and School Programs page.

Botanical Art for Children

10:00 am – 12:30 pm
Instructor: Dorothy Hunter

Children age 10 and older are introduced to the wonderful world of botanical art, including fundamental principles, drawing skills and color mixing using graphite pencil and colored pencils. The class begins with a walk through the garden, followed by a talk about botanical art and the tools they will use, a light snack then hands-on instruction and drawing. A fun morning spent creating something beautiful!

Fee each class: $50 members; $60 non–members. Fee includes all materials. Children 10 and older are welcome.

Fairy Gardens for Families

Saturday, April 30, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm
Instructor: Deborah Walker from Wegman’s Nursery

Enjoy this new class as a family outing. You are never too old or too young to have fun creating something magical! Any one-adult one-child combination can enjoy each other’s company while learning to create a special garden any fairy would be delighted to live in. Using kits provided by Wegman’s Nursery, you will build a very special one of your very own and then display it at this year’s Filoli Flower Show, Thursday, May 8 through Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 10. Details will be provided in class along with two complimentary passes to the Flower Show.

Fee: $80 members; $95 non–members. Fee is good for one adult and one child age 7 and up.

Summer Art Camp

Tuesday, July 12 through Friday, July 15, 10:00 am – 12:30 pm
Instructor: Dorothy Hunter

Children will explore different media such as graphite, colored pencil, and watercolor as they learn to observe, draw, and paint a variety of natural subjects. From flowers, branches, and trees to birds, foxes, and raccoons, children learn how to create lifelike artwork while experiencing the beauty and tranquility of the Filoli nature preserve in our classroom in the woods, Red’s Barn. They will be inspired!

Fee: $200 members; $220 non–members. Fee is good for one child, age 10 and up, and includes all materials. Non-members – fee includes admission to the House and Garden for one adult.

Discover how the families that lived at Filoli used what is now the Nature Preserve. Go on a Docent led hike to visit these special locations – the pond and water tanks, the Bocce court, the cemetery and so much more. This hike covers approximately 2 miles of trails; dress for hiking and don’t forget your camera!

Adult Fee: $15 members; $20 non–members.
Child Fee: $5 members; $10 non–members. Children ages 7 and older that are accompanied by an adult are welcome.

Bird Walks

Saturday, June 11

Walk Guides: Members of the Sequoia Audubon Society and Friends of Filoli

Enter the world of fly catchers, grosbeaks, swallows, warblers and red-shouldered hawks on a Filoli bird walk. Hundreds of migrating birds visit Filoli each year on their way from Central and South America to their breeding grounds farther north. Many birds decide to stay in these woodlands and nest. Don’t forget your binoculars and a bird field guide (if you have them).

Adult Fee: $15 members; $20 non–members.
Child Fee: $5 members; $10 non–members. Children ages 14 and older that are accompanied by an adult are welcome.

Nature In The Garden

Take a guided walk in and around the Garden with a Nature Docent and learn about the plants and animals that make Filoli their Home. Discover hidden secrets of the animals that live here like where they live, what plants are important to them and why the Garden is such a special place for them. Now you can spot them in your backyard!

Adult Fee: $15 members; $20 non–members.
Child Fee: $5 members; $10 non–members. All ages welcome; this walk is well–suited for families with younger children.

Experience the tranquility of Filoli’s nature preserve in the light of the setting sun. Bring your family for a hike in the woodlands at dusk, the ideal time of day to spot our resident wildlife. Don’t forget your cameras and binoculars! This is a two–hour hike on varied terrain. At times it can be strenuous. Please discuss any physical limitations with your docent before you head out. For safety reasons (narrow, steep, and rocky) strollers and wheelchairs cannot be accommodated on the trails.

Adult Fee: $10 members; $20 non–members.
Child Fee: $5 members; $10 non–members.
Children 5 and older are welcome. Non–member fee includes same day admission to the House and Garden.

Did you know that Filoli’s nature preserve has more than seven miles of trails crisscrossing six different types of native California habitats? Join experienced Nature Education Docents on a guided, two-hour hike along some of these well–maintained trails. Experience the beauty and tranquility of our nature preserve while learning about the natural environment and the wildlife that make Filoli their home.

Fee: Free for members or with paid admission to Filoli – $20 adults; $10 children.
Non–member fee includes same–day admission to the House and Garden during normal business hours, 10:00 am – 3:30 pm.

*Except on Special Event days.

Orchard Walks – A benefit of membership!

The Orchard at Filoli is 6.8 acres in size and includes more than 600 fruit tree varieties, including apples, pears, plums, quince, apricots, nectarines, plums, nuts, and more. It is an eclectic connoisseur’s collection of European and American varieties of fruits, many of which were originally grown for the enjoyment of the family of the estate.

Take a walk in our orchard and learn more about this defining landscape feature, taste fruit (when available) right off the tree and discover what Filoli is doing to conserve not only the rare fruits but the traditions of this unique heirloom orchard.
