FILOLI PRESENTS . . .
HOLIDAY TRADITIONS 2007: "WINTER WOODS"

Filoli's beautiful winter landscape inspires the annual weeklong holiday event. Holiday Traditions Boutique to offer expanded merchandise selection
Friday, November 23 through Saturday, December 1, 2007

Woodside, Calif., October 30, 2007 -- Step into the winter woods and see how Filoli’s beautiful winter landscape inspires this year’s annual weeklong holiday event, Holiday Traditions 2007: “Winter Woods,” from Friday, November 23 through Saturday, December 1, 2007. A weeklong celebration of the season, “Winter Woods” will feature Filoli’s well-known holiday boutique and Premier Access Shopping Evening, an elegant evening dinner party, festive brunch buffets, children’s parties and much more. This is Filoli’s largest annual fundraising event and all proceeds will go towards the preservation and conservation of this early 20th century, National Trust historic estate.

About the design inspiration for Holiday Traditions 2007

This year, Filoli’s beautiful oak woodlands inspire this beloved holiday event. In their search for sunlight, arching and intertwining tree branches imitate art and inspire this year’s popular faux bois look. Literally meaning false wood, faux bois is an objet d’art that uses concrete, mortar and armaments to imitate wood, wood grain, boles, stumps and branches. A popular ornamentation style in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, faux bois is experiencing a comeback – particularly with today’s focus on preserving the environment.  Woodland creatures will also take a leading role in this year’s Holiday Tradition’s décor. Imagine deer grazing in the Filoli meadows, squirrels scurrying up and down the trees, a covey of quail scurrying along a path where pinecones, acorns, berries, and mushrooms are scattered. With a beautiful garden feeling, the faux bois decorations and these special creatures will bring our winter woodlands indoors to delight all visitors—grown-ups and children, alike.

Details of the Holiday Traditions 2007 Event

The Filoli House will be specially decorated to reflect the "Winter Woods" theme. A vintage candlelit tree will enchant guests as they enter the front door of the House. The Dining Room will be reminiscent of a traditional family children’s Christmas party. Elsewhere in the House will be delightful gingerbread houses, girls’ and boys’ campgrounds and Santa as a woodsman. Among the scheduled events are holiday boutique shopping days offering an array of one-of-a-kind gifts and seasonal entertainment, festive brunch buffets, an enchantment-filled evening of dinner and ballroom dancing, and the return of the premiere access shopping evening which allows guests the first opportunity to shop for holiday merchandise while enjoying a spectacular evening of catered hospitality.

Expanded Holiday Boutique Selections

A key highlight of Holiday Traditions is the exciting Holiday Boutique. For the first time in Holiday Traditions history, the Boutique will introduce for sale elegant 19th century French and Victorian-era furniture, an expanded clothing and jewelry selection, and the hand-crafted work of nationally known artisans. Among the special clothing items are exquisite silk and faux fur apparel and hand-painted velvet gloves for special occasions and everyday. New to the jewelry offerings this year is the whimsical holiday-themed jewelry from Maximal Art, that melds a vintage look with a modern appeal. This year's selection of hand-crafted items includes the unique folk art creations of West Virginia-based master craftsman, Paul Gordon, and the limited edition American collectibles of Anaheim Hills, California paper composition artist, Debbee Thibault. Both will be on hand to sign their original creations. Also, new to the Boutique this year is the work of Pacific Grove, California ceramicist, Dana Goforth, whose earthenware raku-fired acorn rattles stamped with inspirational quotes will please the most discriminating collector. Guests can look forward to the return of many gourmet foods, an old-fashioned candy and bake shop in the Pantry, Filoli-made gifts, and two garden shops featuring bulbs, plants and distinctive garden items and accessories.
